Last Saturday, a week ago, I began using my iPhone 18 Pro running iOS 27.0. This morning I got a notice to update to … iOS 27.0. Huh? Is my phone running a pre-release version? It seems to me that in the past, these new-phone updates were a .1 or .01 release. I will let it update, but it does seem strange.
Two possibilities come to mind:
- A bug.
- There is a minor update and Apple didn’t bump the version number, so it’s upgrading from one build of 27.0 to a newer build of 27.0.
Either way, I agree that it’s weird.
When I got my 18 Pro and set it up, it prompted me at the time to install an update, so I assented and got it over with. I had anticipated this, having read that Apple’s publicly released iOS 27.0 was a slightly later build than what they had loaded on the first batch of 18 Pros to ship.
In the future, before updating, try tapping on the version # field/button to display the detail screen that shows the exact build number. Then you can check again after the update and compare build numbers.
I can confirm that I was prompted to update iOS on my 18 Pro on initial setup when I received it on the 18th. I’m surprised that you weren’t asked to update on the initial install.
I think I know what happened. I took this phone (purchased from Apple) and my old one to Verizon to do the transfer since I was making other changes to my family plan, and I wanted to get everything done at once. I suspect that the associate at Verizon was prompted for the update and skipped it, for which I don’t blame him. Now that I know others got the same update, I’m reassured that my phone is okay. Thanks to all.
