We haven’t covered Evernote much since the company was acquired in 2022 and raised prices, but the information management app was updated to version 11 at the beginning of 2026 with a new look and has received loads of new features since then. Highlights include an AI Assistant with reusable AI workflows and the ability to update multiple items at once, AI transcription capabilities, a tabbed interface in the Editor, Mermaid diagrams that can turn a few lines of text into a flowchart, and new types of @ mentions.

Version 11.30.6 introduces Evernote’s MCP server (which allows Claude, ChatGPT, and any MCP-compatible client to read, search, and create notes); enables you to ask the AI Assistant to pin notes to Home or add notes to Shortcuts; adds the ability to upscale images past their natural size (up to the width of the note); addresses several printing and export issues; ensures that dictation works in notes opened in a new window; fixes the tag, mention, and note link pickers not filtering correctly when typing in Japanese, Chinese, or Korean; and corrects inconsistent file size display between Note Info, Files, and attachment cards within a note. Evernote can be used for free on a limited basis (one notebook with up to 50 notes and used on one device), but is also offered in two annual subscription options—$99 (up to 1000 notes/20 notebooks) and $249 (unlimited notes and notebooks). Give me a break. The pricing just went up by another 50% or so. They just did their $1.7 Bn IPO btw. When you tag a note and share it with another Evernote user, the tag doesn‘t even transfer, so it‘s not so easy for that person to locate the note or keep notes organized. That is BASIC functionality. Also, the Mac plugins often don‘t work. They can put their AI where the sun don‘t shine — I‘m not interested. And stop constantly alerting me to videos (I have time for their videos?) about their misguided „enhancements.“

I’ve been using Evernote since 2011 for my primary research project in retirement. I have 7000 notes all with appropriate keywords for my purpose. I was very nervous when it was bought by Bending Spoons but encouraged by the increased pace of mostly useful updates. The AI so far is of no use for me but it can be completely turned off. Given the effort I’ve put into this knowledge base and what I get out of it the price is not significant. I actually find that it’s easier to write a quick note in Evernote than in other simple text apps. I like the limited formatting options and no second guessing my intentions like MS Word does that I have to keep undoing.

Of course, there are always things I wish were different or need improvement. For example, I am very unhappy about the way a search always pops up a modal dialog box and “recent searches” rarely has my recent searches in it. The search results are ok, so at least that works.
