The DEVONthink family of applications is very powerful software, but to me the interface is a bit ugly and unintuitive. Version 2 has been with us a long, long time. Here’s hoping work is going on behind the scenes on version 3.
An interesting possible (and partial) alternative is represented by PDF Search. It indexes PDFs and Office/iWork documents in any folder (including cloud folders) you point it to, and then responds to searches by giving a list of the specific pages in all the documents where the search term appears.
