Bombich Software has released Carbon Copy Cloner 7.1.1 (CCC), addressing an issue that could cause the Backup Volume Setup Assistant to be unresponsive. The drive cloning and backup utility also removes a condition that sometimes caused CCC to re-enable Spotlight on the destination, fixes a localization issue that caused notifications to be presented only in English, resolves an issue that could lead to the wrong notes being presented for a task, and corrects handling of resource forks larger than 4 GB. ($49.99 new, free update, 23.6 MB, release notes, macOS 13+)
I wonder if this will also fix the hang that I was observing (both on my old and new Macs) when using CCC to disable Spotlight indexing.
I found that after checking the box to disable Spotlight, the storage device becomes unresponsive for quite some time. And because that screen in CCC is trying to read its list of snapshots, it also hangs.
I think it recovers eventually, but I’ve found that it often seems necessary to force-quit CCC. And on one or two occasions, the volume unmounted itself. But after re-mounting (via Disk Utility) and re-launching CCC, Spotlight indexing is off and everything seems to work fine.
This is where my backup volumes are USB-connected HDDs. I suspect the hang is from macOS deleting the (probably large) spotlight database from the volume, but it is really frustrating.
Fortunately, I shouldn’t have to do this more than once for each volume.
