Solid article. Thanks for sharing. There also are a handful of more advanced tips, often involving command line approaches, in the article’s lengthy comment section. Unfortunately, they are buried in a pile of “just use Linux” and “get a Mac” trolling.
There also are a few utilities that some people find useful for tuning the Windows interface, mostly by consolidating a large number of settings that are scattered throughout the Windows interface into a relatively coherent set of preference panes. For better or worse, there are a lot of such settings. Winaero Tweaker is worth a look. Also useful is Microsoft’s own set of utilities and enhancements, PowerToys.
Your description of OneDrive sounds like a Chromebook.
If you go to the navigation pane in Windows file explorer, right click on “OneDrive – Personal” and then pick “always keep files on this device” then if you have enough space on your hard drive or SSD you will have a local copy of all of your files on your computer as well as having them stored in OneDrive.
You can now locally backup your files; if your files are stored only on OneDrive, they are pointers (shortcuts or aliases) to your files; you cannot backup those pointers!
You can also reinstall OneDrive so that you can define its base folder location to another local drive with sufficient space.
