AI: A Means to an End or a Means to Our End?

Great analysis by Mr. Fry. Transparency and bias are the keys to using Ai effectively. Transparency means that the sources are identified as Ai , hybrid or all human created. Biases can be inferred by the nature of the sources. For example, it is likely that a lot of source material for medical Ai will have little data on children, pregnant women and a number of ethnic groups. As far as the river Thames analogy goes, there is also the story of the mighty Colorado river that has created the awe inspiring Grand Canyon, but now does not reliably flow all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Maybe that will be the fate of Ai.

“Forbidden Planet” been one of my very, very, very special sci movies since I was a very, very, bery young girl. And it still is.

And Apple’s Vision Pro headset cannot come anywhere near to competing with Robbie the Robot. He was a very elaborate and super heavy costume that an actor did 100% of the action, and dubbed in the vocals.

What’s also interesting was that an original Robbie outfit with accessories, and there were a few of them at the time, have been selling at auction for super big bucks:

And there are “Forbidden Planet” iPhone covers:

I wonder if Steve Jobs liked Forbidden Planet?

Adam thank you for making us aware of Stephen Fry’s text that I just read for the third time, and that I distributed to my colleagues and friends. I completely agree with Fry’s demand that AI should be controlled.

In Fry’s text and in the ensuing TB discussion I missed the following aspect: Given that I have an AI tool that solves my problem at hand, I may feel compelled to solve it myself, out of curiosity, pride, satisfaction, …

This happens already today. Though there are chess programs that beat almost everyone, people continue to play chess and to have tournaments. Similarly for Go.
