1Password App Zeroed Out by Failed Update

Like you, I’m on a FIXED income so I can no longer afford to buy new hardware every other year or two as apparently other posters here are still able to do. In fact I have to buy used refurbished hardware when I absolutely need something newer (like the 2022 M2 MBA I bought last year).

Thus, I still use a Mid-2011 iMac that CANNOT run ANY version AFTER MacOS 10.13.6 High Sierra. Ditto, my Mid-2015 MacBook Pro that CANNOT run ANY version AFTER MacOS 12.7.6 Monterrey. BTW, the above 2022 M2 MBA replaced a 2011 MBA that had also maxed out at MacOS 10.13.6 High Sierra. Oh, my  Watch 5 is maxed out at WatchOS 10.6.1; anyone willing to give me an Ultra Watch 3?

While (unlike you “youngsters” ) I may NOT be able to afford the latest and “greatest”, I do like to read about them.

While making a copy of your vault prior to a MacOS upgrade is a prudent thing to do, it isn’t enough of a safety net for me. Something can happen where you are unable to access your vault, like what happened me. . . Regularly exporting .PIF and .CSV backups gives you an out if a worst case scenario occurs, even if it is a temporary situation.

Just curious if you think the issue might also have been resolved by restarting the Mac and/or the app, without re-downloading the app. (Perhaps you or your mom tried restarting; I wasn’t clear.)

So this is super weird. I realized I hadn’t installed macOS 15.7.4 yet, so I triggered the update this morning. When I came back to the Mac and needed to log in to a website in Arc, 1Password was locked and wouldn’t unlock. Upon investigation, the 1Password app was completely missing from my Applications folder. I first tried restoring it from Time Machine—it was in the last backup from before the update—but when I launched that version, it told me that the 1Password data was newer than the app and that I should reinstall. For giggles, I dragged the 1Password app over from my duplicate from last night, and that opened fine.

I have no explanation for this—I can’t imagine why the macOS 15.7.4 installer would have deleted the 1Password app, but nothing else seems likely. It wasn’t in the Trash, so it’s not like I inadvertently hit Command-Delete while it was selected or something.
