As you no doubt know, pre-order is what you do before you can order because the product is not available. If it were available now, you could order it. If it will be available later, you are pre(release)-ordering it.
It makes perfect sense, much more than some other common phrases (hot water heater, PIN Number).
Competent? How are we going to compete with that?
