Your passcode is required to enable TouchId

Francisco Hirsch
Every now and then (more nows than thens) the passcode page of my iPhone 7 appears. The most recent was Sunday.
Since my iPhone is running always the latest updates, why does it appear?
I will appreciate enlightenment.

This is a security feature.  If it's more than a certain number of days
since you last used a passcode, and more than a certain number of hours
since you last unlocked the phone, it requires the passcode.

This article describes it:

https://www.macworld.com/article/3072181/ios/new-touch-id-rules-why-you-have-to-enter-your-passcode-when-you-wake-up.html

I am not 100% sure that the current timeouts are the same as documented
there -- six days since a passcode and eight hours since the last unlock
-- but that's the general approach.  My experience is that I almost
always hit this first thing in the morning.

Dave

Every once in a while it just does that.

I also find that it is very sensitive to the slightest bit of moisture or hand cream on my fingertip.

I must’ve had a slight cut across my finger recently as I couldn’t get in with TouchID for almost a week, then it worked.

All the more reason to set up three or four different fingers in TouchID…

Put in multiple fingers.

Then name them so you can know what they are if you need to delete one that's not working and try it again.

I have 3 fingers in but the bad one was the one I used the most. Naming them is a great idea, I doubt I did that.

Yep, guess I should’ve specified it was my most-used ID finger that didn’t work. But I’d always try it a couple of times and then it would ask for the pw and I just gave in. 😂
