WD My Book not mounting

Steve Harmony
My Time Machine disk, a USB Western Digital My Book, suddenly stopped mounting. It doesn't show up in Disk Utility either. Nor does it mount on my Mom's iMac, so I am pretty sure it's NOT a problem with my MacBook Pro (whew).

Any ideas on how to deal with a USB disk that won't mount any more?

Steve

Steve, I would start testing with a different cable, then with a different HD on the Time Machine to find out if is the failure is in the HD or the Time Machine itself.

Re: WD My Book not mounting

Brian Pearce
It seems likely to be a problem with the Hard Drive (inside the enclosure), or with the enclosure itself. Either could be mostly easy to solve — you could replace the entire device, or perhaps install a new Hard Drive in the enclosure — though not necessarily easy to recover from. If the drive has failed, the data may have been taken with it; if the enclosure has failed, you might not have any means of checking the drive to see if the data is accessible.

Are you seeing any activity with the device? Any lights, or vibration, or any indication that the drive is spinning up at all?

I had two WD MyBook devices that had Hard Drives that failed at more or less the same time (they had been purchased at more or less the same time) after several years of use as Time Machine backups. I replaced the drives with a specific type of WD drive (for compatibility reasons) and both are working again.

Re: WD My Book not mounting

Steve Harmony
Brian,

Yes, I hear a rumbling sound like it used to make when being accessed, and the lights are flashing. On this model, there are two vertical LEDs on the front, one above the other. When it's being accessed, the lights alternate like the lights on a railroad crossing.

I don't really care (knock wood) if the data is accessible, my computer's running fine (knock wood again). The Time Machine backup allowed me to recover after Apple Care wiped my machine after repairing it. I'll probably just head over to Walmart and buy a new My Book.

Re: WD My Book not mounting

Not in my experience and I've owned every version of DW since 1.0.

I also have owned ever version of Disk Genius, TechTool Pro, and a couple of other 3rd party disk utilities that are no longer available, and once a disk became invisible to any of my Macs in over two decades, none of them were able to do anything with them.

DW rebuilds directories on disks that it recognizes. That might allow it to boot or to mount, but it doesn't do anything that would allow an invisible disk to appear.

That's true. But DW can be used on more than one drive unless you want
to keep buying a new drive every time one gets corrupted.

This is almost always a failure of the Internal power-supply. You MIGHT get lucky and have it be a cable, but unlikely.

CCC issued an error message a few days ago saying that it could not
write to the external drive. So I ran the Rebuild option in Drive
Genius, which took a couple hours. But CCC still gave me an error
message.

I rebuilt the directory again using DiskWarrior this time. Now CCC runs
without a hitch, but DrivePulse (part of Drive Genius) keeps telling me
that the "drive contains consistency errors".

I tend to believe DW.

My experience is just the opposite. I have used the same disk utilities. DW sees disks that DG, TTP and others do not. And if you're looking to recover just the data use Phoenix Stellar Recovery.

Sometimes you need to run DW multiple times.

That's not an uncommon story.  Your drive is a cheap drive built to a price point.  I would avoid WD external hard drives in the future.

You can possibly run some diagnostics on your drive using the free demo version of:

DriveDX (free demo)
http://binaryfruit.com/drivedx
in conjunction with the:
SAT Smart Driver
https://binaryfruit.com/drivedx/usb-drive-support

You might even be able to resurrect your drive using:

Disk Warrior ($120)
http://www.alsoft.com

The question is, can you ever really trust that drive again, even if you manage to resurrect it?

If the data on that drive isn't important (and you indicated that it is a backup drive, hopefully your primary drive is fine), it isn't worth purchasing any software to resurrect or recover the drive.  I recommend instead putting the money into a new drive that will be much more reliable.

If you want something reasonably priced, that is decent, go with:

Other World Computing Mercury Elite Pro
<http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB>

If you want "the best" external hard drive, without having to pay an outlandish price (but you are willing to pay more to have the best), I highly recommend a Glyph Studio drive.  These drives are built like tanks!

Amazon offers them at a good discount (if you can find them in stock; they are popular and sell out fast):
