New Ways to Control Your Apple TV in iOS 11.2.5 and iTunes 12.7.3

By Josh Centers
http://tidbits.com/article/17773

AirPlay 2 isn’t here yet, but with iOS 11.2.5 and iTunes 12.7.3, Apple snuck in new remote control capabilities for tvOS and, presumably, the upcoming HomePod. You may even have stumbled across these new features and wondered what they were!

In the iOS Control Center, press the media platter to reveal playback controls. If you have a fourth-generation Apple TV or Apple TV 4K, you should see a new lozenge under the normal playback controls; those with more than one Apple TV will see a lozenge for each. (Sorry, this new feature doesn’t work with second- and third-generation Apple TVs). We’re guessing that the HomePod will get its own lozenge too.

The lozenges appear regardless of whether you’re playing anything on the associated device; they’ll just say Not Playing if nothing is playing. Otherwise, each lozenge displays information about the media that’s playing, and tapping the lozenge reveals media controls for that device.

In iTunes on the Mac, click the AirPlay button, and you’ll see a list of Apple TVs under the Switch To heading.

Click one to make it so that the iTunes media controls manage that Apple TV’s playback instead.

To switch back on either platform, follow these instructions again but choose the device itself instead of an Apple TV.

That’s it! This new feature isn’t earth-shattering, but it is a convenience for Apple TV users. I’ll discuss these and other new features in my upcoming update to “Take Control of Apple TV,” which I just submitted for editing.

I was playing with this today, but I thought it was a 11.3 beta feature!

To be fair, I think I only had 11.2.5 on my phone for about 7 minutes before 11.3 beta…

It's already proved quite handy for me.

This breaks Air Play as far as I'm concerned. First when I click on the AppleTv in iTunes, it asks me to 'Enter the AirPlay code for device .......'. What is the AirPlay code?

Secondly, I use to be able to choose the AppleTV 4k as part one device of several to send the audio stream from iTunes to. Does this mean the AppleTv or the HomePod won't participate any more?

If you turn the Apple TV on and the TV on, when you first select that device, the code appears on the screen. Once entered it does not ask for it again (at least it hasn't for me).

Re: TidBITS: New Ways to Control Your Apple TV in iOS 11.2.5 and iTunes 12.7.3

I solved the code problem by telling the AppleTV that anyone on the network could participate without entering a code.

But, I’m still faced with the problem that I used to be able to choose the AppleTV 4k as part one device of several to send the audio stream from iTunes. I now can’t choose the AppleTV 4k to particpate in my multiple device array in iTunes.  I was able to do this previously.  To me, this means it is broken.

Where can I find outlaw AirPlay 2 is supposed to work?   Is the capability to send from iTunes on my Mac to multiple devices gone?  The AppleTV 4k should show up on the list of AirPlay devices.

This is a reason NOT to buy a HomePod.

In iTunes 12.7.3, when I click on the AirPlay icon in the iTunes window I’m presented with a dropdown menu containing the name of the computer running iTunes and a list of all AirPlay-compatible devices. In my case, that is a single AppleTV. If audio is currently set to play on the computer and I click on the name of the AppleTV, audio output switched to the AppleTV and vice versa. If I want to play the audio on both the computer and the AppleTV, I click on the checkbox to the right of the device that is currently disabled and audio will play on both devices. Is it not possible to select more than two devices via the checkboxes in the AirPlay menu?

I can send AirPlay audio from my iMac to my receiver and both Apple TVs  (4th gen not 4K) simultaneously.

The 4th Gen AppleTV in a separate list in the pull down within iTunes.  This is addition to being in the AirPly list.  See below.

I can switch to it, whatever that means.  Anyone know where there is a write up on how AirPlay2 functions?

Airplay 2 is not out, so no, there is no write up on it because they are still writing it.

Since I can ‘switch’ now, it would be good to know what ‘switch’ means and why I would want to do it.

You can only test the current beta, AirPlay 2 hasn’t been released.
