Both of my plastic cards are chipped so a 4 digit number is required. That is something you set. I agree the signatures are a joke.

All US credit cards should now contain chips, but none of my credit cards require a PIN. Only my debit card does, as it always has.

I have read that most European cards have been Chip + PIN has been in place for years.

True in the UK, and probably also the rest of Europe, for over 10 years. Card fraud plummeted as a result. Felt so strange on my last US trip (2014) to occasionally have to sign. Fraudsters now try and discover you PIN by various means, such as phoning up cleaning to be the police and sending someone to collect the card as “it has been cloned” and the need the card and the PIN. Or they install a card skimmer and camera at ATMs to read card details and see you enter your pin. So now we are encouraged to hide the keypad with hands, wallets, purse, long hair, while entering the PIN.
