Spam/Phishing emails with names from my contacts

Howard E. Rosenman
Every now and again I get a spam/phishing email where the name of the sender is someone from my contacts (but a fake email address). One of these has been coming every few days lately.

I have no reason to believe my contacts have been compromised - my theory has always been that the other person has somehow been phished, and my name and email address are coming from their contacts in some way.

Valid thinking? If not, what action would you take to determine the truth?

Ues. I had this for a while some years ago. Your Contacts list might have been hacked, probably not. or the Contacts list of someone who has you on their Contacts list or address Book might have been hacked. Probably no way of finding out.

You should be able to safely block the email address used by such spam since it is not likely on your own Contacts list.

Welcome to the club. Its happened to me a few times.

I've noticed this tends to happen from contacts who send out bulk emails and put the names of the recipients in the To or cc field instead of bcc. Or a spammer could have gotten access to an account of someone you have had contact with in the past.

Valid thinking? If not, what action would you take to determine the truth?

Looking at the full headers usually will reveal the source.

As Diane alluded, you both could have been send an email with your email
addresses in the clear that also went to others and someone who also
received the email got hacked.
