Replacing hard drive

Alexis Alvarez
Looks like my iMac’s hard drive is dying and needs to be replaced. I’ve double-backed up everything. Will not be doing it myself, taking it to an Apple approved outfit.

Besides de-authorizing the computer and wiping out the hard drive, is there anything else I should do before taking it in?

It is always a good idea to test the backup - If it is a clone, boot from it.

I wouldn’t bother with a hard drive if I were you. I would have an SSD installed instead. It will cost a bit more, but certainly worth the investment.

De authorizing is good. Don't forget limited license software like from Micro$oft and Adobe in addition to iTunes

I think this only applies to the Create Cloud Apps. Not the prior CS iterations.

Re: Replacing hard drive

Marilyn Matty

Years ago I ran into this problem with the first CS Suite. Deauthorize.

No, it applies to the CS6 apps (and CS5, CS4, etc.). I’ve had issues with it in the past when updating a HD.

No, but when you get it back take an Ethernet cable with you and plug it in. Not to anything, just make sure the Ethernet plug goes in and comes out easily. I've seen several iMacs come back from service just slightly off enough that plugging in the Ethernet is very difficult.

I replaced my iMac's drive with a 1TB SSD which has given it a new lease on life and will probably let me put off a replacement for at least another year.
