Re: SYSTEM FAILURE upon USB plug in of ALFA Long Range USB Adapter (11n WLAN) (Harald Sundt)

Thom Ryan
Now I am perminantly poor and must let my iPhone turn into an iPod and
use WiFi to access my local Cottage Grove OR Public WiFi.

I am desperately trying to make my

AWUS036H ALFA Long Range USB Adapter
(11n WLAN)

work with my Mac Tower running Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549).

This WiFi booster enable my Linux/XP Dual Boot laptop able to reach my
City's feeble signal.

AFTER installing the  ALFA provided software I THEN plug in the USB
cable to the WiFi booster and the system crashes in gray multi-lingual
FAIL.

Greetings Harald and Tidbits List
I have some experience with USB wifi and kernel panics.
1-The power demands from a USB wifi device are variable with
throughput, range and sensitivity.
The reason you are using a USB wifi device is because Apple engineers
have carefully controlled the internal wifi to limit battery drain.
2-The Apple USB ports are not equal; one port will be shared
internally with the keyboard, iSight, etc.
The System Profiler will reveal the "unshared" USB port; try this port
with your power hungry USB wifi device.
Turn off the internal wifi. The kernel panic could be a power management issue.
This approach did delay the kernel panic in my case but the system
would fail over 24 hours (solved issue 2 but not 1.)
I still use my Quickertek USB wifi device with the marked USB port
when working in "portable" mode, (i.e. automobile) knowing that a
kernel panic can happen.
My long term wifi piggyback solution needs line power for a POE
connection to a Ubiquiti Nanostation Loco working in "station" mode.
I distribute the Nanostation through an Airport Express network for
everything (Skype phone, laptop, iPod, printer.)
The Nanostation LoCo is tenacious with distant access points and a
poor piggybacker's dream that will pay for itself in less than two
months.
Don’t tell your ex.
Kind regards

Harald Sundt
Thank you Adam and Thom. I am scrambling even as we speak.

Thanks again.
