Re: Re- Lion-scrollbars

Mark Gibson
Hi,

OK I tried for three weeks now, but how can I turn the scroll
arrows back "on"?

Trying to fine scroll through mailboxes with 30 000+ messages is
just not working now (I either go way too far "up" or too far "down").

I'm using a MacBook.

I don't want it to be an iPad with a hinge and have no interest
in multiple finger combinations as they rapidly tempt me to use
one with an extended index finger for this machine and the urge
to go back to my 10.6.8 MacBook Pro is very tempting.

Regards

In the General System Preference Panel just mark the 'Scroll Bars Always On' button.

Can't you change that in System Preferences?

I assume you've got the scrollbars hidden. Note that once you start scrolling you can grab the little thumb and drag it like the old days. I find that very helpful for scrolling really long lists.

Methinks he is talking about the scroll"Arrows", not the scroll "Bars". The little arrows at the top and bottom, left or right of the window in previous Mac versions that let you notch the window contents up or down one tiny bit at a time. I, too miss those little buggers.

Yes, I'm sure Mr. Gibson was asking about the arrows on the scroll bars,
not the scroll bars themselves. One more reason for me not to switch to
Lion yet, as I find the scroll arrows extremely useful.

Do the page up, page down, and arrow keyboard keys still work to move
the contents of a window?

Hey Mark,

So you've got the bad news already; you can't.

You have a Trackpad?  If so then you shouldn't have any problem scrolling at a reasonable rate.  Just don't use the scrollbar.

For that matter you can option-drag the scrollbar to slow things down.

Re: Re- Lion-scrollbars

To all,

Yes sorry was referring to scroll arrows not scroll bars (topic
Vs text).

To Chris,

Yes I can do that, but trying to shift-click or option-click to
select messages while "option-dragging" doesn't really work.

Just hoping / praying for Onyx or TinkerTool will eventually fix this.

Regards to all responders,

Mark

Hey Mark,

I'll be very surprised if this one is fixable, but you never know.  Apple is really trying to drive in a certain direction and force us to take the ride.

I finally turned my scroll-bars back on, because they serve as visual cues for position in documents and lists.

So I take it that you're trying to do a range selection in Mail?

Can you click to start your selection, scroll to the terminus, and shift-click to finish?

I'm not seeing the utility of the scroll-arrows in this instance, since you can do fine-scrolling with the trackpad.  So either I’m missing something, or you are.

Keep in mind that I'm just trying to help - not shoot down what you're upset about with Lion.  I have my own list of things I like and things I can speak about with considerable venom.  My big pet peeve is the painfully slow, often less than attractive, and counterintuitive animations.

I strongly doubt that TinkerTool will be able to fix this. I don't think there are any codes in Lion to do the scroll-arrows, so TinkerTool cannot simply turn them back on.

Besides feedback to Apple, you might also want to feedback to the companies that make the apps on how, because of Lion, their app is now more difficult to use. (And, yes, this may also be Apple itself.)

No not Mail (as in Apple's Mail) but mail generic (actually Mailsmith).

You may be able to, all I do is over shoot and instead of
selecting say 156 messages I have to select five chunks of 30 or
whatever fits in the window.

Apple may want to force us into all use iOS regardless of
platform but several of my clients have already given their feedback.

I have one who bought 200 iMacs recently solely on the proviso
that they could roll the back to 10.6.8.

The line was either we do this or we go to Windows (with a quote
from a Windows supplier waved under the Apple reps nose).

This wasn't just scroll arrows but the whole iOS centric crap.

I'm now happily formatting these machines and re installing 10.6.8.

Yes we have given feedback to Apple and others on this and other
Lion issues.

Not subtle feedback but feedback.

As mentioned in another post, one client while confirming a
purchase showed the Apple rep a quote for 200 PCs with the line
"the Macs come with or can be rolled back to 10.6.8. or we will
send them all back".

So we got a set of install DVDs for that model and we are now
formatting them and rolling them back to "pre Lion".
