Re: Opening old Word docs

Mary Shafer
If LibreOffice doesn’t work, I’ve had success using TextWrangler to open the toughest old Word version files.

Wishing everyone happy holidays.

TextWrangler? That’s a text editor, not a word processor. How can it open MS Word files with formatting, footnotes, etc. intact?

Just wondering.

As I and others have confirmed before , the free LibreOffice generally works fine… but not 100%, I just realise: Headers (and possibly footers?) are lost.

This means that I’ll stick to my other way of opening such old files: I open them in Word 5.1. under SheepShaver, save as RTF, then open the RTF in Word under OS X.  More work than using LibreOffice, but the result is closer to the original.

It can't. But very old Word files can at least have their text recovered using a text editor like BBEdit (there is no TextWrangler anymore, just BBEdit in free mode).
