Quark was sold!

"John Turner the Bear😎"
If you are a Quark user and have not seen this note on Facebook or elsewhere here it is. I can say that there is a lot of mixed opinions about it, much of it concerned and confused.

Quark Software Inc. announced that it has been acquired by Parallax Capital Partners, LLC (Parallax), a Southern California-based software-focused private equity firm. The new owners intend to help Quark accelerate the adoption of its content automation solutions through investment in organic growth and acquisitions.

Recently selected as a Gartner Cool Vendor in Content Services and a 2017 SIIA CODiE Award finalist for Best Multi-Channel Publishing Platform, Quark has showcased its success in content automation. Quark's content automation solutions enable organizations to deliver business-critical content to any format and any channel - mobile, print, and web.

"Quark is having a transformational impact within a wide range of industries, completely redefining how organizations create, manage, publish and deliver business-critical content," said James Hale, managing partner at Parallax. "This is a company with outstanding talent and leadership, innovative technology and acclaimed customer base. Parallax is looking forward to bringing its experience and expertise to help Quark take its enterprise content automation business to the next level."

"I couldn't be more proud of our employees and customers in reaching this milestone," said Quark president and CEO Ray Schiavone. "Quark has achieved what so many established brands fail to, which is to reinvent our company in the face of insurmountable odds. Through content automation, today Quark enables some of the world's largest organizations to transform customer experience, reduce time-to-market, improve compliance, and reduce costs. In Parallax we believe we have a partner that shares this vision for organizations to realize the true value of their content.”

Re: Quark was sold!

Wow, could be quite the shift for one of the last original Apple developers (Quark originally had a word processor for the Apple II!) This is probably their last best chance for survival as the desktop publishing market shrinks.

Re: Quark was sold!

From what I have seen about the company on Facebook they do not have a very good record of continuing support or development for companies that they have previously purchased. One note states that they have a record of draining the purchased company of its assets and then deserting it. I myself know nothing of this company, never heard of it before today. I’m only reporting what has been said before me.

A new note on Facebook regarding the Quark sale and the company that bought it ( posted 10 min ago):

After visiting Parallax's website here is some info from their portfolio. They list 17 companies of which 7 are currently under their ownership. They have let 10 go. The average number of years of ownership is 4.8 years although two have been owned for 15 and 16 years. All are tech based but none are in the graphics or publication area.

I'm not surprised, and the guy who developed Quark and stole Adobe PageMarker's lunch was very smart to sell it for a gazillion dollars when Adobe had InDesign in beta. One of its revolutionary advantages was, and a very huge one it was too, was that it it enabled and encouraged developers to build Xtensions, and just a few years later, Xtensions using xml, allowing customization that Pagemaker couldn't accommodate.

At the time of the first sale, I ranted and raved on TidBITS Talk about how InDesign couldn't possibly make a dent in Quark's market share just because it has a few extra features because so many big and small design, printing and production companies had already invested so much In Quark and Xtensions. And for a few years it didn't.

But then Adobe started giving InDesign away with a Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat and Dreamweaver, something Quark's founder probably anticipated. But he did make a big mistake for not rejiggering Quark to run on the early versions of OSX, as Adobe did with its applications. The handwriting was on the wall.
