Number of Gmail messages differs. Why?

Norm Harris
I use Apple Mail to read my Gmail.

Just noticed that the total number of “Sent” messages is different on Gmail’s site and Apple Mail on my iMac and yet another total on my travel Mac.

Is there a way to diagnose and fix?

I assume there may be other Mailboxes/Labels that will reflect different total messages.

Thanks for any education on reasons and suggestions.

Are the accounts set up as POP3 or IMAP? With IMAP you would expect accurate synching. With POP3 not so much.

Re: Number of Gmail messages differs. Why?

I've noted problems with accurate counts in Apple Mail. I'm primarily an Outlook user, but often look at Apple Mail as I beta test for Apple. I've also filed reports with Apple. To date, it doesn’t seem resolved.

I've tried deleting the accounts (gmail, outlook.com) but it was not an effective remedy.

I just looked myself. One thing that I noticed is that Gmail and Apple Mail both collect messages into threads of messages, and for the Gmail interface, the counts are the number of threads ("conversations" in Gmail speak), not the number of messages, while Apple Mail is showing a count of actual messages. When I went into Gmail in a browser, clicked the gear icon on the right, then settings, and turned off "conversation view", the number of messages in the Sent label changed. The counts were still a little different (Apple Mail says 4370, Gmail says 4491), but the numbers are much closer.

I didn't actually count the number of messages in each because I'm not all that bothered by that small difference.

In Apple Mail, I'd also look in the "Accounts" pane in Preferences that the "Mailbox Behaviors" sub-pane for the Gmail account has the Sent mailbox set to "[Gmail]/Sent Mail". If it is set to a mailbox on your Mac, it would only show the number of messages that you sent from that Mac.

Not really. GMAIL is its own thing, and it only sort of works as IMAP.

Apple broke AppleScripting signatures in Mail.app, so no random signatures.
