Missing ringtones - Sierra

Doug Hogg
Hi,

After upgrading iTunes, the custom ringtones we made are missing.

Does anyone know where to find them?

:-)

Doug

The TidBITS article said "iTunes 12.7 removes the Tones library." I know it's gone from the GUI but if it's not gone from the file system, they should be in ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Music/Tones/. If they are gone from the file system, restoring from backup is probably easiest. The article covers how you can still use iTunes add ringtones to phones.

iTunes 12.7 Giveth, but Mostly It Taketh Apps and Ringtones Away

I never installed 12.7 and did install 12.6.3 which still has the Apps and Ringtones GUI but apparently has no upgrade path.

I have upgraded iTunes to 12.7, and all my custom ringtones are still in the file system. Also, the technique of updating tones on your iPhone as outlined in the referenced TidBITS article works a treat! I’ve added the new “Reflections” ring tone from the iPhone X to my iPhone’s repertoire.

Re: Missing ringtones - Sierra

Doug Hogg
Thanks.

Yes, they were buried a few levels down in my friends music folder. For some reason, drag and drop was being finicky, but I was able to select the ring tones one at a time, choose “Copy” and then “Paste” them into the ringtones on iPhone.

:-)

How did you do that?

Lifehacker, and others, have details

(though the linked file  -Reflection.m4r.m4a - has the “wrong” extension, and you have to remove the .m4a)

Lynne Adema-2

Actually, it's not a bad ringtone. Most of the ones the iPhone gives are not that good.
