Major problem with Word in Office 2016. It cannot open the PDF it created. Confirmed by Senior Support staff this afternoon!

John Turner

I have been online and on phone with Support since 9AM Eastern time. I just talked to a Senior Support person and she just confirmed that Word cannot open the PDF it created from a Word file in Office 2016. She told me that they are aware of the problem and that it will be at least 30 to 45 days before anything can be done! She told me that they are currently focused on the Windows version, and that is their current priority. I asked would I be contacted if there was a fix. She said no. The only way to find out is if an update was downloaded automatically or it MIGHT be posted on their web page. I checked the website and their last update or workaround info on that page was in January.

I was told to continue to work on the Word document and wait for the fix for the PDF export and import in Office 2016.

I just dumped Office 2016, cancelled my subscription. Removed myself from the Community and all Microsoft community. When they told me that Windows was their priority and that no help or fix could be anticipated for at least 30 to 45 days I decided was done with them.

It s fascinating that Nisus can open the Word PDF and The Word documents and edit them and save them perfectly. I have had Nisus for years and did not realize these capabilities. And yes Vincent, Preview had no problem opening those PDFs either.

At least they acknowledged the bug and are working on it.

I'm not surprised they won't contact individuals about fixes that gets pushed out to tens of millions of users.

30-45 days, IMO, isn't that long when you consider how much testing needs to go into fixing, verifying and deploying patches.

Agreed, this seems pretty reasonable. They push out updates (with bug fixes and new features) every single month. That’s better than any other productivity suite I can think of…

Maybe reasonable, but when Microsoft or any other company that is Mac associated says that Windows is their priority and that Mac users have to wait until they get around to them is unacceptable to me.

I have a question.

When did Word pick up the ability to open PDF's?  I don't have Word 2016, I'm using an older version, but it can't open a PDF, even one that it created.  I've owned a number of different versions of Word in the past decade or so, and they've all been able to create PDF's, but I don't recall that any of them have been able to open (let alone edit) a PDF.

Has the ability to open (and maybe eve edit) a PDF *ever* been a feature of Word?

Starting with Windows Word 2013 I think

Did that feature ever make it to the Macintosh version of Word?

Has anyone on this list ever been able to successfully open (and maybe even edit) a PDF using any Macintosh version of Word?

When I talked to the Microsoft Store, before I made the purchase, they said it did. When I talked to the Senior Advisor she indicated that it was a bug…though she had to create and open a PDF herself to be sure. I have only had Office 2016 for 2 days, I had no experience prior so I had no idea that it could not open what it created. I’ve learned now. Maybe Microsoft will fix the problem…but not in my lifetime I’m sure.

RE: Major problem with Word in Office 2016. It cannot open the PDF it created. Confirmed by Senior Support staff this afternoon!

John Turner
It’s a real shame, considering its cost and reputation. Does the Windows version open PDFs? I’m not sure. However there is a Mac dedicated app that will do it all, that is very inexpensive, and a wonder to operate! I have used it since it 1st came out. The app is Nisus Writer Pro. It costs around 100$, is well supported…has a  free 500+ page PDF manual that explains everything exhaustively. It supports Word, PDF, eBook, RTF, Plain Text and others. Its primary format is RTF and its conversions are nearly perfect.

Did that feature ever make it to the Macintosh version of Word?

Has anyone on this list ever been able to successfully open (and maybe
even edit) a PDF using any Macintosh version of Word?

Has anyone ever seen any advertising, anywhere, that said that the Macintosh version (not the Windows version) of Word 2016 included the ability to read and edit PDF's?

<https://products.office.com/en-US/mac/microsoft-office-for-mac>

I can't find anything, anywhere, that says that it has those features.  I can find a Microsoft Web site that says that the Windows version has this feature:

Regarding PDF, the Manual says "It will open a PDF file and display the first page of that file as an image."   Can it also do more?

Yes, Nisus Writer Pro converts PDF to native documents with fully editable text. I didn’t actually know that it had that feature. :-)

While I’m not criticizing or commenting on anyone’s behavior here, I do wonder why it’s useful for Word 2016 to be able to open a PDF that it created. PDF is a final production format, not an intermediate format. The ability to open a PDF in a word processor is useful purely as a way of getting the text out (possibly with some formatting) for significant editing and manipulation. If you just needed to make a small change in a PDF, you’d want to use PDFpen or the like.

That page is very inexact:

Work with PDFs

Here’s a time-saver you’ll really like: open a PDF in Word on your desktop, and edit content—like paragraphs, lists, and tables—as if you created them in Word. And you can save them as a PDF or Word document.

It does NOT say you can natively edit the pdf — only that you can open it — and re-save it as a Word or pdf document.

I suspect that similarly to Nisus it converts the opened pdf to a Word document for editing.

It seemed kind of pointless to me too.  But I have run into a fair number of users in help forums who have to make large scale changes or even language translations of docs which for some reason they only have in pdf format, and they seem to find this feature quite valuable when it works.

Yep, as a major conversion approach, it’s understandable, though there are a bunch of Web sites that will do this too. I was pretty impressed with http://www.zamzar.com/ when I tested it after someone else asked about this.

That page is for Windows-only.
