Folks, I am desperate! My wife and I have a 76 year old friend, who has been living with us for the past 20 years, who is buying a new iMac tomorrow. He has an old 32 bit iMac running 10.6.8. He has a Time Machine Backup. He needs to install his Contacts etc from the Time Machine Backup to his new iMac. He also wants to import his favorites, bookmarks etc. from his old Safari and FireFox to his new iMac. Is this possible? It has been years since I have done anything like that, from so old of a Mac and OS that, I really donā€™t know what to do and he is begging me to do it for him.

Help!

Time machine should have it all and if attached, should offer to restore to the new iMac.

Specifics I don't know but I have exported from the old machineĀ to a standard format and then imported that file on the new machine for contacts and bookmarks.Ā

Select restore from Time Machine during the setup assistant or Migrate from Another Mac and all will be transferredā€¦you will need to connect them via a Thunderbolt (or maybe a USB cable will workā€¦check Apples pages to make sure it will work from a machine running 10.6) or Ethernet cable.

Migration will probably work, but I would recommend having archives of the key files that you mentioned. You can create a web page containing all a userā€™s bookmarks from the File menu in Safari. On the new machine, you can either access it directly or recreate the bookmark form using the Import From item in the File Menu. Both Contacts and Calendar can create and restore backups (created in Export and restored via Import). These files should all be pretty small; you should be able to fit them on a thumb drive.

I donā€™t use Firefox, but I see that it has a help page for backing up and restoring bookmarks. Use it to create a similar portable backup file of the Firefox bookmarks.

In addition,if you can acquire (temporarily?) a hard drive large enough to store all the current data on the old machine, you should create a clone. You can download an appropriate version of SuperDuper from http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html. In trial mode it will create a full clone. I would recommend using this rather than the Time Machine as a base for a migration as it should go faster and be less likely to have problems. Having both Time Machine and clone backups as well as backups for the key files should give several recovery paths should there be problems.

Thanks everyone! I think that you have solved the problem! Iā€™m so glad that it is so simple. I was unsure that he could import the 32 bit data to his new Mac and OS.

Is he buying the iMac at an Apple Store?

If so, he can take his Time Machine with him and I think they will transfer all his files for him -- or at least make sure he leaves with the right adapters to be able to connect his Time Machine drive to the iMac so he can do it himself (or have you do it for him) when he gets home.

Note that OS X 10.6 was the last version of the Macintosh OS that included Rosetta.  That means that any third party (non-Apple) applications he was running that were written for the older PowerPC Macs won't run on a later version of the MacOS and will be lost (unless there is an updated version available from the developer.)

If you want to know which apps will be lost, run this free utility:
