Crash plan

tori hernandez-3
Hello All. I am considering using an online storage service as a backup for All my data. Is crash plan a great choice?

It works :). The client software is a little funky because it’s written to be cross-platform, but you normally don’t interact with it unless you need to change something. Restoring files is a bit fiddly, but works.

I use it, but I also use Backblaze which I much prefer.

Crashplan backsup much more slowly than Backblaze (like 2 orders of magnitude slower); when Backblaze is humming along I get 10Mbit and it is not unusual to see Crashplan under 20K/s.

True, though Backblaze will send you 3 e-mails before doing so, and if you prepare before a holiday you can increase it to 6 months:

Re: Crash plan

Tori Hernandez
I'm not at all familiar with these online backup systems.
Could you please explain your statement further?

"Backblaze will send you 3 e-mails before doing so, and if you prepare before a holiday you can increase it to 6 months:"

Increase it to 6 mos?

"Unlimited" online backup services like Backblaze don't want you using their services as an archive, so they require any *external* drives you backup to always be connected to your computer (online). If you take the drive offline, after 30 days they'll delete the backup of that drive.

(If they didn't do that, you could swap hard drives and potentially upload hundreds of terabytes of data and they'd have to store it for you for your $5/month.)

The poster's comment is that Backblaze will send you three emails warning you that a drive is offline and will be deleted, but if you're going to be gone for an extended period of time, like a vacation, you can ask and they'll change the limit from 30 days to up to six months.
