Can't access Earthlink webmail

David Brostoff-2
With a MacBook Pro 15-inch 2017 running macOS 10.12.6, since this morning I suddenlly can't connect to Earthlink webmail through my Xfinity (Comcast) gateway.

I can connect to webmail  fine if I use my iPhone as a hotspot.

Yesterday I checked the security settings in the gateway (WPA2-PSK [AES]) but made no changes that I know of. Later I am fairly certain I was able to access Earthlink webmail with no problem.

Anything obvious to look for? Other suggestions?

Thank you,

David

Sounds like Comcast might be blocking Earthlink’s IP address. I suggest calling Comcast support.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I had already tried that. They said, "We have nothing to do with Earthlink."

Now on the phone with Earthlink. So far they have said, "We have nothing to do with Comcast."

I suspect there is a gateway setting I have inadvertently changed, but which one would affect this?

David

Earthlink has now suggested the same thing, so I'll try Comcast again.

In the meantime, is there something in the gateway I might have inadvertently changed that could have initiated the blocking?

A few months ago I had a similar problem -- not only did all my email accounts fail to connect, but I couldn't visit any of my own websites (indicating I couldn't access those domains).

When I tried with the cellular connection of my phone, everything worked fine, so that told me it wasn't my domain host, but something with Comcast.

They ran some remote tests and said my Comcast modem was "dying" (parts of it showed up as "yellow" meaning they'd soon be red and completely dead) and needed to be replaced. I was *very* skeptical that a dying modem would be so selective as to only block my own domains and not others, but it was a free fix so I took the old modem in and installed the new one and bingo, everything was back to normal.

I still have no idea why it died. The modem was only about a year old. Comcast support made it sound like that's normal and about how long the things live. Bizarre.

The only thing you should need to connect to earthlink is the name of the mail servers. This may be one name used for IMAP/POP3 and another for SMTP but they may be identical.

Probably it will be something like imap.earthlink.net and smtpauth.earthlink.net.

If something is not working with those and you’re using IMAP. You can try to ping the server.

Open up Network Tools in /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications, click ping in the tab-bar, and type in IMAP.eathlink.net.

I am seeing a failure on my Comcast business connection.

If it fails for you, this is something to tell earthlink.

I am shocked that Earthlink is still in business.

To make a long story short, that is the same thing I ended up doing, with the same result.
