A High Sierra issue (Contacts)

Jerome King-2
I am running High Sierra (macOS version 10.13.1) and just discovered an issue with Smart Groups in the Contacts application (version 11.0. 1806)

I use Smart groups extensively to select sets of my contacts for mailings.  I am. NOT talking about manually created groups

I just discovered that when I try to edit the rules of the Smart Group, the display does NOT show the rules.  It is a blank area where the rules would display

I can create a NEW smart group and the rules show when creating the smart group and it functions
However if I then attempt to edit the smart group (enhance / correct, etc) the rules are not shown

Jerry

Re: A High Sierra issue (Contacts)

Alan Forkosh
Just tried it on my iMac running 10.13.1. I could not reproduce the problem. When I right clicked on an existing Smart Group, I selected Edit and the rules where shown and available to be changed.

It is possible that a cache or preference file is corrupted. I find that rebooting can often clear simple corruption, so you might give that a try if you haven’t already. you might also try clearing user caches using a program like Onyx or Cocktail. Since cached data is, by definition actually stored elsewhere, you shouldn’t lose any information although some processes and programs may initially start slower.

I did a search for ‘apple contacts smart group troubleshooting’ and did come upon a similar report at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8141401?start=0&tstart=0 (2nd message) from about 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately, no solution has been posted.

Re: A High Sierra issue (Contacts)

Thanks

I hadn’t done any diagnostics. Was just devastated by losing my ability to change / modify my Smart Groups

I will try a reboot path. Since I power off my iMac every evening I know that a normal boot doest fix it

Re: A High Sierra issue (Contacts)

Jack Clay
Hi List,

I upgraded to High Sierra yesterday. I am experiencing the same issue in Contacts: Smart Groups exist and have the correct contacts in them but the rules don’t appear when the groups are edited.

Hopefully someone has seen this and learned of a fix.

Thanks,

I did a Safe Boot on my iMac this morning    It did not correct the problem.

I also received confirmation of the problem from a couple of others (not TidBITs subscribers)

Re: A High Sierra issue (Contacts)

Jerome King-2
An interesting set of reports

One individual with a laptop and an iMac. Both a couple of years old

The MacBookPro doesn’t have a problem with the rules showing BUT he has 3 copies of the smart group in the Contacts sidebar

The iMac duplicates my problem (almost)

Must be variations of the OS among different hardware generations and products

Just did this and did not see your problem.

My suggestion (it’s now my goto #1 after “did you turn it off and back on?”) is “Did you turn it off and then hold the shift key down whilst turning it back on?”

Once the machine is up you can let go of the shift key and login, then wait a minute or two for everything to settle down, and reboot again.

This seems to be doing all sorts of fixing things in the background in recent OS versions.

Re: A High Sierra issue (Contacts)

Jerome King-2
did all that. didn’t make any difference

This seems to be a machine configuration issue.  I have an associate who has many mac computers.  It appears on several but not all
I’m sure that the binary code for machines are different depending upon the physical differences.
Thus not all machines will have the same "minor" issues

Nope. With very few exceptions having to do with brand new hardware, macOS is identical on all machines.

But as to your problem, the only other thing I can thing to try is to create a backup of your contacts (File => Export => Contacts Archive), wipe the contacts, and restore from the backup.

However, I think that doesn’t backup your smart groups and there may be other issues with that, so thread carefully and do some research first.
